HP Data Protector Limitation as a Backup Software

Undoubtedly  HP DP has been one of the most trusted and powerful enterprise backup software. But in modern IT somehow it is lacking in certain areas which require lot of attention specially from HP LAB.

Below are some specific points which I encountered during my experience with HP DP.

1. First and foremost HP DP does not have Web console like its rival. Therefore you have to install GUI on multiple system to monitor the environment.

2. Hp has improved a lot in terms of its internal database. Certainly it was a appreciated move from Raima to PostgreSQL.  But during IDB failure you are totally dependent on restore from tape or Disk. It were better if there would have been multiple instance of IDB running in the environment to fail over. If  I am not wrong many enterprise backup software are  giving this functionality.

3. Oh, Its really hard nut to crack if you are backing up virtual environment with HP DP. HP DP requires lots of work to be done in this area specially in terms of restore. If you need one file you will have to restore entire disk and if the size of disk is 4 TB then you can imagine your frustration. DP do have granular recovery to restore single file instead of disk but again it has lots of dependency I am sure you wont like this zig zag.

4. Let me throw some light on Hp backline support. They have most sluggish way to address your concern. If you will log a case with them, they have all the luxury to ask you same set of questions again and again. By the time you will provide information, engineer will out of the shift and your case will be hanging in balance. In short support is poor.

5. As far as dedupe is concerned HPDP has source, server and target level deduplication technology. I found backup is comparatively slow in case of Server or source side of deduplication.

6. Reporting is another area where you will be disappointed. HPDP has new reporting software in its kitty but its is based on Linux so you need a server with Linux installed to use this reporting tool. HP DP inbuilt reporting is very poor.

7. I have seen full VM recovery features in other software where the entire VM can be up at the backup storage end within few minutes. HP Labs need to work in this features to increase RPO and RTO.

As I have a long associations with HP DP so would like to see above improvement.
